So much is made in other reviews of this book of the family that seeks perfection only to fall further and further from it, but I think the story isn’t so much about perfection as it is about just plain seeking. All of her issues brought on by what? A less kind conclusion can be drawn if you consider the fact that the spelling bee was invented as a gimmick to sell newspapers.
The last third was awful. I picked up this book because I have liked watching or reading all these recent spelling bee movies or books. The following day, at the class spelling bee, she deliberately misspells a word. Sharon Leader I didn’t despise any of them.

A kind conclusion one could draw is that spelling bees are an indicator of the importance language plays in national pride and identity. I couldn’t get through this book fast enough and I couldn’t resign myself to not finish it. She sees in Saul the househusband who will enable her parental ambitions without disabling her autonomy. I was really drawn into it and when I finished, I found so many ways to interpret the final scene.

Bee Season was well received by critics. Why did you set this novel in the early s? To me, they were very one-dimensional. Never did get around to reading Secret Life In the two days I spent there watching godberg bee, interviewing some of the contestants and eavesdropping, I felt I had entered an alternate universe of anxiety and expectation ruled by one of the most arbitrary of systems: She is arrested and the true nature of her golberg is revealed and she is admitted to a psychiatric hospital.
