The majority of it is taken up with the bureaucratic and romantic intrigues of a court in the small Italian state of Parma, and to the modern Western reader most of this stuff is crushingly dull. Basically the boy bumbles around Italy, falling into scrapes and having very unpassionate sex with women he doesn’t care for and not really having any direction at all in his life.
I think conceptions of literary STAKES were still missing at this point and so we are built toward a climax that we don’t really care about and then fade away. Stendahl’s great strength is showing us characters who are oblivious to their own inner motives those motives being plain as day to us readers and there is some of that here, as well as some compelling characters especially the Duchesa Gina Sanservina, the real hero of the storybut markedly absent is the biting wit and barbed social commentary of Stendahl’s other great novel.

Then the suddenly passionate Conte broke into a sonnet he wrote as a boy once when his mother had struck him for pilfering a sou from her purse. Such buffooneries were uttered that even the dogs barking outside were scandalized.

The novel’s early section describes Fabrice’s rather quixotic effort to join Napoleon when the latter returns to France in March the Hundred Days. Charterhouse, however, falls just shy of greatness because it was so rushed, I think, and Red and the Black is a masterpiece that justly ranks Parmz with Balzac, Moliere, Flaubert and Zola. I did find shades of Lord Byron’s “Prisoner of Chillon” in some aspects of the irony of his finding solace in his imprisonment. You know, this didn’t really do it for me.

Best of all though, is the stretch of the novel when Fabrizio is imprisoned in the beautifully designed tower. He really made a number of knuckleheaded moves with his c I read this novel after finishing The Red and the Black, which I thought was the far better novel of the two.

None of this, however, turns out quite the way that it would for Dumas pere –or Anthony Hope, for that matter–for in the world of Stendhal the individual’s romantic impulses–as in real life–are often thwarted by circumstance. This act deeply reinvigorates Gina’s passion which she believed to be waning.
Jan 13, Cristina rated it it was amazing Shelves: Since going to join Napoleon was officially illegal, she and Count Mosca try to plan out a successful rehabilitation for the young man. A sprawling, sloppy, often-exhilarating read. Count Mosca, committed to installing Fabrice para the Vicar General and successor to the Archbishop, arranges for Fabrice to be tried and acquitted. The novel is cited as an early example of realisma stark contrast to the Romantic style popular while Stendhal was writing.
