Re-reading this has changed my mind. Can’t be highly recommended enough Both a tear jerker goodnjght uplifting. The ending is great, and it’s a tearjerker in both the book and the movie. Yes, some people get very dark tans, but no one goes from white to black with a tan. I felt Zach’s death was really just for the sake of it. Only heathens talk about film on this site. It has a simple plot, is sprinkled with sadness, has fantastic characters, and is wonderfully warm-hearted. Nov 07, Miz rated it it was amazing Shelves: A different kind of world than we have now.

It takes hold of you from the earliest pages and doesn’t let go.

You can picture the boys confusion at never having been in the country and wondering what things were. And once he turned black, we were constantly reminded of how black he was, something which did not happen when he was white.

Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian – review

Apr giodnight, Jeanette rated it it was amazing Shelves: But World War II has come and with it the blitz and tens of thousands of London’s children are being evacuated to the country and the luckiest thing in the world happens to Old Tom and little William Beech – God brings them together. William is malnourished and badly bruised as he had been locked under the stairs for a number of days.

Never mind the germs, Tom wants his dog. And yes, he does find him – locked in a closet, tied up to a pipe in it and holding a baby who turns out to be his illegitimate sister.

Another irritating thing about him was the fact that halfway through the novel, goodnighf got a tan, and somehow turned black. M Go [1]. After a bad reunion, where his mother becomes furious upon learning the details of her son’s life with Tom, abhorring his association with the Jewish Zach among other things, she hits William and puts him in the under-stairs cupboard, chains him to the piping.

The ending was different to how I remembered, but I am so glad that I gave this a second read. My sons had to read this at school.

Dec 27, Ivan rated it really liked it. It’s just too unbelievable. Under his care, William begins to thrive, forming a small circle of friends at school among his classmates including fellow-evacuee Zach. Tom, William and Zach then enjoy a holiday at the seaside village of Salmouth, where they stay in the house of a widow whose sons have been sent out to war.

I first came across this story many years ago when it was on the TV and fell in love with it then. Every time I finishing re-reading it I want to go and hug my mother.

It was almost as if there was nothing else to do for the end if the novel. It has aged extremely well. It’s about a time long ago during World War 2 in England. The last time I read this book -I think – I said that I thought the writing was quite flat and unemotive.

I read this for English at school, and was wary of its’ war undertones at first. It turns out that William cannot read, that in London his teachers ignored him and the other students taunted him. He learns to love a world he never knew existed, a world of friendship and affection in which harsh words and daily beatings have no place. In my grandmother sent me this book. I midhelle shed a tear when he died. Life for William, Mr. A small, nervous boy called Willie Beech enters Goodngiht life and home as an evacuee from war-torn London. Tom is warned that it is likely that William will be taken to a children’s home, and, unable to observe William’s distress any longer, kidnaps him from the hospital and takes him back to Little Weirwold.

You just ruined the end of the book for me. Aside from the personal story, the book raised a lot of questions for me I thought by the title and the cover mmichelle this would be a simple little tale, but it was actually very harrowing!

At first, you sense uncertainty as to what will become of Will and Tom but then as the story unravels it shows the development in both their characters and just how wonderful and how strong their relationship becomes.

I also did not care, and continued reading, glad to be near the end. The last scene was so cheesy I wanted to vomit. Sep 22, Mansi rated it it was amazing Shelves: But William has a bed-wetting problem that continues despite everything. Later, when his favourite teacher Annie Hartridge has a baby, William is shocked to learn from Zach that a woman cannot conceive a child on her own, and realises that his mother was having a relationship with a man, even though she had previously told him that it was wrong for unmarried couples to live together or have children together something which society in general had regarded as unacceptable at this time.
